Il Trovatore
.

le voilà !

Act I, scene I
Fifteenth-century Spain
The Aliaferi Palace
......................................................................
Scene Two
The gardens of the
palace
(enter Lady
Leonora and her friend, Inez)
.......................................................................
Inez :
What happened?
Leonora :
I will tell you.
The night was silent,
and the sky serenely beautiful.
The moon filled the
heavens with its silvery light.
Then arose a sound from
that silence.
I listened to this
sweet, gentle sound.
It was the harmony of a
lute ; and a troubador, singing his
melancholy song.
Prayer like, humble
verses, like one praying to
God. And from the song a
name - my name, he sang.
Running to the balcony I
saw the unknown knight.
Joy as only the angels
must know overcame me.
To my heart, the earth
seemed like heaven itself.
Inez :
All you have told me
fills my soul with terror.
A sad foreboding is
awakened by this stranger.
Forget him ! I tell you as a friend.
Leonora :
What are you saying?
Enough!
Forget him! Those are
words my heart cannot understand.
Of such a love no evil
word can be spoken; for
such a love intoxicates
my heart.
My destiny cannot be
fulfilled without him near me.
If I do not live for
him, for him I will die.
........................................................................
(The sound of a
troubador’s lute is heard in the distance)
..........................................................................
Manrico :
“The world is a
desert, barren of joy from the cruel destiny of war.
But one hope remains; one heart alone for a
troubador.”
.........................................................................
Scene Three
The mountains of Biscay
Gypsies :
Look! The night
dissolves in the firmament.
Like a widow who ends
her time of mourning.
To work! Take the
hammer. Strike the anvil.
Who can sing the praises
of such a life?
Only the gypsy!
Pour me a drink. Wine
gives the body strength,
and the soul courage! Oh
watch. A brilliant ray of
sunlight dances in your
glass.
Back to work!
Who can sing the praises of
such a life? Only the gypsy!
